We have been doing a lot of projects on our new house and this wasn’t the first, but it is one of my favorites. As my friends well know, I have a soft spotΒ for kitchen gadgets and I work in a place where I can sometimes get some deals on them so I have a substantial collection.

The kitchen has four big, wide drawers and I filled one of them with utensils and gadgets. Unfortunately, they were just big and open and impossible to keep straight. Ever since I found this post on Pinterest, I knew what I had to do.

I went to a few home improvement stores and finally found what I needed at Home Depot. They had some beautiful poplar “hobby boards”. They are 1/4″ thick x 4″ wide and 4 feet long and cost $3.96 each.

I looked at my drawer and the way we had it laid out. Some frequently used things stayed in the same place all the time so it was easy to find spots. The other items I sorted by type and planned out where they should go. I got the first couple boards in place and realized I had forgotten to take a before picture. The front items were here before, so picture it without the dividers in place.

It made a pretty impressive mess. After planning the drawer out, I got my boards and began cutting. Since we don’t have any fancy saws yet, I borrowed my dad’s miter block and saw and got to cutting.

Do not try this like this at home. I am amazed that I avoided sawing the counter and I still have all my fingers. I also highly suggest a real saw. It would be much easier and probably cut straighter.

Anyway, After I cut the boards, I drew a line in the drawer where I wanted them to go. Then I fired up my hot glue gun and put a bead of glue along this line. **Whoever thought of this is a genius. The glue holds securely and can be peeled off if you want to change it.** Then I quickly put the board in place before the glue dried and put more glue around it to fill in the cracks.

I just kept doing this until all the dividers were in place. I only had two small hangups. 1) the glue gun jammed half way through and I had to un-jamΒ it. 2) The saw was old and dull and I had to call Dad for some tips to use it better before my arm fell off from trying too hard. Eventually I finished, though.

Isn’t it a thing of beauty? Then, all I had to do was put everything into place. I even found that I had more room and could add in several larger items like the egg slicer, cherry pitter, and mango splitter
(yes, I really use all of these)!!!

And here it is in all of its glory. Now when I need something I know where to look and don’t have to dig for several minutes to find it. I think I may try this in my bathroom drawer next.

I had to giggle at the saw comment, good thing Dad was around! Turned out great too, I must get one of those glue guns!

    1. Life in the Between says:

Glue guns are great. I highly suggest for a good one that does both high and low temp. There is nothing more frustrating than cheap tools that don’t work properly. That is one thing Dad taught me. Of course, he also taught me to get cheap screwdrivers and use them as chisels and pry bars.

      1. Diane says:

ROFL! Your dad sounds like a character πŸ˜€ I used to have a glue gun but I left all my stuff behind when i moved here to France. I am slowly building back up my supply closet…er stash…um hoard xD

        1. Life in the Between says:

Everyone needs a good hoard. We bought the house so we could fill the basement with ours. Take your time, the accumulation is half the fun.

  2. This is such a great idea! I love how organized it looks! Just wish the drawers in my kitchen were that big!

    1. Life in the Between says:

I think the drawers really helped sell me on the house, and now I can even find things in them. The amazing thing is that after a couple weeks they still look this organized!

  3. Oh my heavens! That drawer is a thing of beauty!! It’s so genius! I’m gonna have to use it to organize the drawers in my bathroom for all my beauty products.

    1. Life in the Between says:

This would be perfect for the bathroom. Let me know how it looks when you are done!

  4. Laurina says:

Great step by step DYI for kitchen drawer dividers. One of our kitchen drawers looks a mess and could do with better organization like this.

    1. Life in the Between says:

There is always one, isn’t there? It is amazing how doing so little can do so much.

  5. Oh this is one DIY project I need to undertake fast! Thank you for making it so simple.

    1. Life in the Between says:

I wouldn’t have actually done it if it wasn’t easy. Let me know how it works for you.

  6. Jennie says:

Great post! One thing I’ve definitely been learning lately is the importance of having the right tools. I’m trying not to pound nails into the wall with my shoe anymore, lol…

    1. Life in the Between says:

Ahh yes, the shoe hammer is a good friend of mine. I may have tried kicking the boards to break them once or twice. The saw was slightly more accurate, but not nearly as much fun.

  7. Gwen says:

Your post has come at just the right time for me! We have just moved house, and no longer have wide kitchen drawers that can fit a plastic drawer organiser, so all our cutlery and utensils are rattling about together in two drawers. It is a mess! I will be using your instructions to sort it all out (although I think I will ask my husband to cut the wood- it will be safer for us all!) Your photos and instructions are clear and straightforward. Thanks for posting about it.

    1. Life in the Between says:

Congrats on the house! That sounds just like our old apartment. I highly suggest sharing in the cutting part-it would be MUCH easier that way.

  8. Sherri S says:

What a great solution, and I love that it’s DIY and inexpensive! I have the same issue in my kitchen and this looks like something I could handle. Thanks for the idea!

    1. Life in the Between says:

I highly recommend it-this has made meal prep SO much easier.

  9. Lisa says:

Hi Meagan, easy project and oh-so functional.

I have about 12 drawers in my house that could use dividers like this.

    1. Life in the Between says:

Watch out-this project can be addicting. I have been looking at all of my drawers differently now.

  10. I am so in love with this drawer! I have a drawer in my kitchen that could use a serious makeover. This DIY project is very awesome! Thanks for sharing!

    1. Life in the Between says:

Go for it! I hope it helps.

  11. Nice job! My wife did something similar years ago when we lived in an apartment. When we finally moved to the house she went the plastic route; not as cool looking as what you did but it saved her a lot of time.

    1. Life in the Between says:

It sounds like your wife is a great blessing. I considered the plastic route, but couldn’t find anything the right size, so I was kind of forced to do this.

  12. What a great idea. My drawers in my kitchen is to small for this – which is horrible since I love my gadgets too. However, I think it will work great in our dressers for more organizing of those socks and things.

    1. Life in the Between says:

That is a great idea! Now I have to go re-think my dressers. Thanks for the inspiration!

  13. My kitchen drawers actually came with something very similar, but I’d love to customize it for our needs.

    1. Life in the Between says:

Sounds like you have a great groundwork. Everyone’s needs are different, that is the beauty of this project.

  14. Congrats on a job well done! It’s amazing what a few pieces of board, a saw and some glue can do. Thanks for sharing.

    1. Life in the Between says:

Thanks! The really amazing thing is that it all took less than three hours once I found and bought the boards. Considering my lack of experience, pretty much anyone can do this.

  15. Christina says:

Ugg, the drawer of doom! I happen to have three of them in my kitchen. Thanks for sharing this easy and inexpensive fix. (I too am glad you still have all of your fingers.)

    1. Life in the Between says:

I know exactly what you mean, this one has two siblings. Thankfully, for the others placing large things on non-slip mats has sufficed. I hope this helps you.

  16. yumeating says:

What an awesome idea. My husband has gotten back into wood working lately. I am going to have to show him this because I have an old farmhouse with these really large and weird drawers. They are such a mess. This would be perfect for them.

    1. Life in the Between says:

Woodworking husbands are a real blessing. I hope this helps!

  17. Oh my gosh, I so need these. I’m glad it’s so easy to do. I need to fill all my drawers with dividers; feeds my organizational obsession!

    1. Life in the Between says:

      Yes! Organize all the things!

  18. Pat Bacon says:

Love this idea! A place for everything and everything in its place. But….. a mango splitter…. seriously? You amaze me! Happy Commenting!

    1. Life in the Between says:

Have you ever tried to cut a slipper mango well? I am not that coordinated. The splitter was a splurge, but it may be the reason I still have my all fingers. πŸ™‚

  19. Hannah Fellows says:

    Ooooh I love this!!

    1. Life in the Between says:

  20. I need to do this too. Great organization project, and Dad’s like to feel needed, so I bet he loved helping you solve your problem!

    1. Life in the Between says:

He taught me well, but I will always need him. He was certainly glad when it was done.

  21. Victoria says:

Great job! I need to do something like this in my kitchen drawers! Thanks for the idea!

    1. Life in the Between says:

Thanks! I;m glad I could share the inspiration.

  22. Crisi says:

Great job!!! It turned out nice. I love doing diy projects around the house.

    1. Life in the Between says:

Thanks! Isn’t it satisfying to make your home better to your specifications and not have to pay someone else to do it?

      1. Most definitely πŸ™‚

  23. mbunthank says:

Great idea! Yours turned out well despite the setbacks. We also have large, wide drawers for things to get lost in. They end up turning into junk drawers, which drives me insane! I think dividers would help me keep them organized!

    1. Life in the Between says:

I had four months of the crazy junk drawer before I had enough and did this. Isn’t it maddening? Life is so much easier when you can find things where you left them.

  24. Howard @ Backroad Planet says:

What a creative person you are! The drawer looks great, and I’m sure it is a relief to bring order to a chaotic drawer like the one in my kitchen.

  25. So love this!! ALOT! I need dividers in my life. Organization, I love. Not always the best at it. Will show this to my husband to recruit his help. πŸ™‚

  26. Lexi says:

great job on this diy project for your drawer! I also need to check out these kitchen tools you mentioned πŸ˜‰

    1. Life in the Between says:

I’m pretty sure kitchen tools make the world go round. Or at least make food prep easier and much more fun.

  27. Karmen says:

This is great! I love/hate Pinterest but when something works, it really works! Next house, assuming I have drawers I’m sooo doing these dividers.

  28. shandryss says:

Yup! I must make something like this in my kitchen! Great job! Best wishes!

  29. I’ve found some of the greatest ideas on Pinterest. I love this!

  30. Nice job..project for your draw dividers keep things in place for me Not handy but will check out kitchen tools.

  31. That is a neat idea. I might have to try that sometime. Thanks

  32. Absolutely great idea! My drawers are a ridiculous mess.

Where are you in Michigan? We’re in Gaylord. πŸ™‚

    1. Life in the Between says:

It is beautiful around Gaylord; I am near Grand Rapids.

  33. Great job! I am so impressed. What a fun project.

  34. I love this! I haven’t been able to find any premade drawer organizers that work for my needs, but I never thought about making my own custom ones before! Then they will work out exactly how I need them to

  35. camilleduqueaguila says:

Very creative. I bought a drawer organizer at Ikea but it’s not enough for all our stuff. I have to buy one again.and again. and again.. Now I think I’ll just get my hubby and “force” him to make this instead of driving me to Ikea. This is waaaaay cheaper plus the fact that we can customize it for all our things to fit perfectly

  36. Missy says:

I HAVE to show this to my hubby! I think this would be so handy… especially when I cook and bake A LOT.

    Thanks for sharing this tip!

  37. emma says:

I may have to try and convince my husband to do this to our kitchen drawers! So much nicer than the plastic trays you can buy πŸ™‚

  38. Oh, that is awesome! I will have to try this . . . someday πŸ™‚

  39. mellissaa says:

It’s so funny that I’m reading this today because me and my mom actually went to Ikea last night looking for a drawer divider. We got one that doesn’t fit our drawer very well but maybe doing it like this ourselves is the better option! Thanks!

  40. MomMaven says:

Kitchen drawers…what a luxury! I have one regular size drawer that holds my silverware and two small drawers on either side of my stove, one holds my good knives and the other my measuring cups and spoons. I long for a kitchen with drawers, cabinets and more than 3 sq ft of counter space.

    1. Life in the Between says:

That sounds just like the apartment we just moved out of. I think the drawers sold the house to use. They (and the counter space) are such a luxury and I appreciate every inch of them.

  41. progers39 says:

What a fantastic idea for all those gadgets. I, like you, have way too many.

    1. Life in the Between says:

I am pretty sure they multiply when we aren’t looking.

  42. Jennie says:

Wow! Even I could do that…maybe. But since I couldn’t even get contact paper to stick in my drawers, I’m not sure, lol…

    1. Life in the Between says:

Sure you can. The funny thing is that I did these over the contact paper that came in the drawers because I couldn’t bother to take it out.

  43. Such an great idea and I love that there are literally only three items needed to complete this project in a couple hours. Congrats of making a organized kitchen gadgets drawer and inspiring me to make my own soon.

  44. blessedfe says:
